Subject : platen for glueing torsion box skins

hello, when glueing the top and bottom skin of a torsion box using a vacuum press do I need a platen or does the opposing skin serve the purpose of the platen. I would plan to glue one skin at a time.
also, any concerns about distorting the torsion box by using a vacuum press? the ribs are 3/8 baltic birch and the skins are 1/2" MDO ( for subsequent veneering). thank you for any advice.

A couple things. First, I would strongly recommend you glue both skins on at the same time for stability and preventing possible warping. You do need some kind of platen board with grooves in it otherwise the air will get trapped in the bag. You could use some netting like our Evacunet for this purpose. I personally prefer the platen board. You didnt mention what is the rib spacing on the torsion box. Too much space and the 1/2”MDO will deflect between ribs.

thank you Darryl for your response. I was planning for a grid of 4". I could do a "dry clamp" to see if there is deflection. I will let you know how it goes.
thanks again.

I think a 4 inch grid should work well but a dry run would be wise to be sure
