I am doing a round crotch mahogany burst table on MDF with solid wood edges glued to the mdf. Can I use a bought two ply African mahogany veneer for the backer and under the crotch? Would that make the crotch side unbalanced? I am thinking of using the pre-made two ply to save time in the layup.

How flat is the crotch veneer, how many pieces in the starburst, and what is the overall diameter?

I would not back the crotch with a two ply but use a single piece of veneer for backing. Besides being more balanced for the crotch, now you will have a two ply for the front side and one for the back.

Great thanks. The table is 60" round with twelve inch perimeter leaves to bring it to an 84" table.

So i did a test press with a leaf panel. The panels for the perimeter leaves are MDF center with birch around the perimeter. I pressed the two ply mahogany on the back and one layer of mahogany on the front to be followed with the crotch to balance the panel. As I feared the panel warped a bit because of the unbalanced veneer about 3/32" over all.
Do you think that the panel will come back when the crotch is pressed to balance the two ply? I wanted to cut the circle, rout the interlock shapes and fit the leaves before pressing the crotch because of the banding and burst pattern on the crotch top. Perhaps I will have to do all the shaping and fitting on the top first, then lay up the veneers all at once.
What do you think?

I guess i will press the crotch to my backer and glue both two plys at the same time. That will keep everything balanced.

Its hard to say now that the panel is warped if further veneering will balance it out or not. Will you be veneering on the concave side or the convex side?

Hi the single veneer is on the convex side. The warp is about 1/16".

Don't know if it makes a difference, but when I've needed to use two ply the project was small enough that I could press them side by side in the vacuum bag, or one after the other, the first day, and then glue the pair of two plies to the core the next day. My understanding is that the purpose if using two plies front and back is to balance glue curing stress on both sides of the core.

Can you do another test pressing, even if using different veneers, putting together the two ply pairs one day and pressing them together to the core the next day, and evaluate for warp a couple days later? When the completed pressing comes out of the bag, lean against a support almost vertical overnight so that the two sides dry evenly.
