Has anyone tried a Timermate grain filling product on burl?
If so, have you had success? I would like to fill the grain on a 4' x 11' burl dining table top.

I'm also thinking of a rubbed out tongue oil varnish for a finish coat as opposed to a conversion varnish.
Thoughts on durability for a dining table top?

What species is the burl, and (assuming it's possible) are you planning to tint the filler?
Since I keep reading how misleading the descriptions of tung based finishing products are, what is the name of the finish you are considering?

Hey Don,
The burl will be Pelin, not sure about tinting the wood filler probably a good idea. The tung (not tongue... ha) oil will be a Waterlox product.

I have used the timbermate on regular oak & such & it is really good.
Being waterbase you can do extra coats if need in a single day.
In order to rub out a varnish on a large table, that could be a lot of work. I would suggest you try a larger sample not a 6" x 12" may be 2' x 4' & see what it's all about.
I now take anything big to a professional finisher for a post cat.

Hey Mike,
Timbermate sounds user friendly.
Your absolutely right about sending a larger scale table to a finisher.
That was going to be my plan. Usually I'll have my finisher spray the finish coat in a conversion varnish, however, he suggested a tung oil varnish instead to achieve a richness in depth. I'm worried about the hardness and wearability compared to conversion varnish.
Any thoughts?

As soon as you fill the pores you will be approaching something like what I call the musical instrument finish.
My finisher only users post -cat & even some stir people around here use it on treads. I suggest 2 coats of gloss (90) & then a top coat of a lesser sheen say (40 to 60).
You will have all the 'depth' you need.

If you are going the conversion varnish route you may want to try Level Sealer from Campbell. I resisted it for years, being old school and thinking the only way was Behlen's and a ton of elbow grease. You will get varying recommendations on application, but it levels off quickly. Well worth a try to add to your bag of tricks.
