I just changed the first paper on a batch of crotch sapele and one end is still showing slight wrinkling. This was after 5 hrs in the bag. should I reapply the softening mix or will it continue to flatten as it dries? i am doing 7 layers of veneer with screens and paper between. It has 3/4" melamine on the top and bottom of the stack.the veneer is a little thicker than normal.

Another question on drawer faces. I was going to veneer the crotch to some 3/4" birch plywood. should I cross band behind as I am doing on the 1/4" MDF door panels, or is the plywood sufficient as cross banding and substrate all in one.
Thanks
Joe

Joe,

Did you flip flop the veneer orientation or are they all stacked on top of each other the same way?

Well, in that case I cant say for sure without seeing the veneer. Sometimes if the veneer is too wavy it will ripple a bit no matter what you do. You can try re-wetting it, it surely wont hurt but I dont know if it will help either.

The veneer was pretty flat to start with, but did have waves. After applying the softening mix, the end away from the but of the crotch rippled. The rest stayed fairly flat. I will leave in the bag overnight and check in the AM. If I rewet, should I use the gf20 mix with the glue, or just apply the gf20 without glue?

If you re-apply the GF20 don't dilute it this time.

All crotch species should be cross banded, or two plied.

Thanks Craig,
I left the veneer in the bag overnight, and no difference. The veneer does not seem to be much flatter then before the treatment. I will try the gf20 next by itself.
A couple of questions;
Will I have to use the screens again?(In case the PVA glue reactivates.)
Do you think less sheets or another 3/4" caul in the middle of the pack would help?

Joe

Joe,

When you reapply I would suggest doing one or two sheets at a time. Because the glue is still in there I would play it safe and use the screen again.
