I have never entered any sort of chat room/ forum before and all I can say is Wow! A chat room devoted to veneering? Excellent! I really enjoy veneering. I was first introduced to veneer in 1998 at a small wood shop in Denver. In those 4 years of employment I was challenged and humbled by the art of veneering. I've been away from veneering for about 8 years now. Currently, my small Montana business, has welcomed a veneer press. At the wood shop in Denver we used an electric vacuum pump. The pumps ran fine with the occasional over heating and cleaning of filters. For my shop I decided to try a Venturi air powered pump. Constructing the Venturi was'nt an issue, finding a large enough compressor was. For a 4' x 8' bag and a 9cfm draw at 1 mile high elevation I was thrown into a 60 gallon compressor. Ouch$$$! I haven't used the press very much,so I can't give a very good comparison. My main reason for the switch was to avoid overheating and less maintence. We shall see! I will give an unbias report. Once again this is a great forum!

Jason,
Yes this forum is wonderful although I don't drop in as much as I should. I think darryl thought I was nuts when I told him that I wanted to build a 12 x 5 foot table. None the less, it works flawlessly and the gluing I get from it is flawless. Any samples I've distroyed, I've found 100% glue contact!

I'm interested in why you need such a big compressor. I have a 5 x 12 foot table with an 80 gallon 5 HP (a real industrial compressor not a home depot 5 HP with a locked rotor one) that only cycles on once in 2-3 hours once it's sucked down. The first "cycle" takes around 45 seconds or so. Maybe you have a leak which causes your venturi pump to come on more often and stay on longer? When ours does cycle on it stays on for about 3-5 seconds.

Keep gluing!

Gary

Gary,

Thanks for the response. To be honest, I don't know what's going on with my Venturi. Before I start the pump I set my Venturi guage at 18Hg. It holds at that setting and has zero decrease in pressure. So, when I start the vacuum of the Venturi everything seems fine until, the Venturi guage reaches 15Hg my compressor fires up. Then I have to turn off the Venturi and wait for my compressor to refill. Then I turn the Venturi back on to get the 18hg. Once the Venturi reaches the 18Hg and holds, it all the sudden drops to 15Hg and holds steady at the 15Hg. I've been in constant contact with the supplier. We have trouble shooted every aspect and have resorted to me sending in my Mac Valve, checke valve, and Venturi set up so the supplier can test it on his own 60 gallon compressor.
The supplier has told me at my elevation (5,380ft.) I should be able to achieve 20hg. So far, that has not been the case. Maybe it's a simple error on my part. I have gone over the Venturi assembly over and over... and it seems right. Maybe I'm over looking something. I have no idea.
Any rate, thanks again for the reply Gary!

Veneer on,
Jason

Jason,

What is the CFM vacuum rate your venturi can draw?

this is interesting, it "all of a sudden" drops a few inches Hg... Do you hear a leak anywhere? The supplier checked it and it's ok? How big is your compressor?

I do hope you can figure it out.

I just received word from the Venturi supplier. He noticed that the check flow valve and the Venturi conection were a little loose. So he tightned the connection and Wa-La everything worked fine on his 60 gallon compressor. He was able to achieve 23Hg. I am now waiting for my set up to be returned. Error on my part... oh well live and learn.
Talk to yah later,

Jason

I figured it was something like that. It had to be a mechanical issue...
