If I laminate multiple pieces of bending plywood together in the vacuum press will the pieces stay in the same shape as the form...does the laminated piece become rigid? I ask because one person told me that laminating them together does not provide rigidity and that they only become rigid after you add the veneer faces.

Thanks,

Bill

hi bill,

yes you can laminate bending plywood without the faces and they will remain rigid. however, the "spring back" will depend on what glue you use. urea resin is a rigid glue and is used for just for such an application. pva or yellow glue is semi rigid and there will be a litle "spring" back encountered.

but to answer your question, you can glue up bending plywood by itself an expect it to keeps its shape.

Bill,

To add to what Craig said, the radius and number of bending ply's will make a difference as well. As an example, lets say you only have two sheets around a 6" radius , you would get some spring back. The more layers the better the holding power. I also recommend a sheet of veneer between layers of bending ply. I find this helps hold the radius better and makes the entire panel more stable.

Bill,

Here's a link to a page I never quite got around to finishing. The pics should explain fully. These were made with 3 layers of 1/4" bending Luan, bendy ply, etc. They're 7" radius. Unibond 800 and apply plenty between layers.

And these were made from several of these.

Earl,

How do you do the table edge? Solid wood? Veneer?

By the way, they look great.

Charles,

The sides or aprons are made from 4-4" tall quadrants, cut from the curved panels and glued into a circle. The transition piece from the side to the top is solid wood, again cut into 4 segments and glued and clamped to the top. If I remember correctly it took 6-8 jigs to make the pieces of the tables. Each table is made of 21 pieces.

Thanks for the compliment. I did these tables in '06 thinking I could sell them at the Milwaukee Fine Furnishing Show. The problem is, I can make a sq. table for almost 1/3 what these cost me in labor. And no one wanted to pay the premium necessary for round tables. So I've given them to good customers and as gifts to Family or Friends.
