Where can I buy the 10 mil kraft paper used on many veneer panels? I have some raw veneer I need to stabilize, and don't want the extra thickness of cross banding with another veneer.

I have a vacuum press. What glue, adhesive sheet or best means to bond the to together???

Hi Bob,

you might try finding some yorkite. I dont believe traditional kraft paper is what you want. Yorkite is a vulcanized paper product used specifically for veneer backing.

The manufacturers of paper backed veneer use a 10mm paper which already has glue on it. The veneer is laid on top and the put into a hot press at 210 degrees. This of course activates the glued paper.

Hi Bob,

I believe Darryl also suggested gatorply at one time as well. Traditionally
used as a plastic laminate backer.

Bob,

As Craig said, both Yorkite and Gator ply are meant for this purpose. The only problem is the quantity you usually have to buy.

I suggest calling Oakwood Veneer. I'm pretty sure they sell a similar backer specifically for the use you want. Ph#800-426-6018

You can glue it with regular yellow glue since its stable or you can use urea resin glue, although not as necessary. Make sure you do the same to both sides of your panel.

Sincerely

Thanks for info...a great help.

I'm not familiar with either of products mentioned. My situation is the edge of the veneer will be exposed...meaning, I want to veneer some raised panels on my cabinet doors, so the edge of the veneer will be exposed at the edge of the raised panel. Thickness is a concern and the plastic edge of the backer or extra thickness of the gatorply. That is my thinking for using a thin "kraft paper" backer.

Volume of work/pieces...maybe a dozen at a time, 18 x 24.

Any other idea/suggestions for me??

Bob

Hi Bob,
Is the panel higher than the frame? or are they flush with one another?

The raised panel surface will be equal to the rail and stiles.

I looked up Yorkite and Gator-ply on the internet and did some reading...I'll give them a call on Friday to get specifics and suggestions on how I can use their products.
