Will Unibond work well for gluing cocobolo veneer to a plywood panel? Do I need to wipe the veneer down with naptha or other solvent first?

Peter,

Unibond 800 is designed to work very well with oily wood with the possible exception of Cocobolo. Cocobolo has such a high oil content that it may be the one wood that I might suggest using epoxy for. You may want to try polyurethane as well but I have not tested this glue on cocobolo so I cant say for sure.

You may want to try a test with Unibond 800. If its well adhered 12hrs later it will be well adhered 12 years later. No matter what the "experts" say testing is the sure fire way to be safe.

I would wipe with either acetone or alcohol.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Thanks for the advice Darryl. My next step today was to do a test with Unibond and epoxy. I'll let you know how it turns out.

So here are the results for the test pieces of cocobolo. For each type of glue I used two pieces of veneer. I used Unibond on one set and West Systems epoxy on the other. I wiped each piece down with lacquer thinner before placing it on the glued up panel. I had them in the press for about 16 hours or so. They both cured fine.

I wasn't sure how to really test how well adhered they were so this is what I did. I clamped each piece in a vise.

On one piece of veneer I used a chisel and with just body pressure I attempted to remove the veneer from the plywood. I found that the Unibond came up much cleaner and easier than the epoxy. That is not to say that it didn't require a decent amount of pressure to remove the Unibond. It did not just "snap" up.

On the other piece I took a block of wood and pressing it up against the veneer I used a mallet to strike the block and attempt to dislodge the veneer. This was a fruitless effort for both samples. Neither budged.

If you want to see the images of the samples you can see them at:

This veneered panel is going to be used as a fixed, enclosed shelf for a table so I don't imagine anyone is going to take a chisel or anything like that to try to remove the veneer. My question is this, should I be worried that the Unibond came off easier than the epoxy sample? I know Darryl stated that if it is adhered after 12 hours it should last 12 years so my guess is that I would be fine using the Unibond? I ask because I think it was easier and cleaner to use the Unibond instead of the epoxy. Thanks for any advice.

Peter,

Your test method is a little different than mine, I have never used a chisel.

I glue a piece of veneer to a panel with a 1/4" overhang all around. Once the glue is fully cured I grab the overhung portion of the veneer and try to pull it up. I consider it well bonded if it breaks off at the edge of the panel or no more than 1/2" into the panel. If it comes up in strips then I consider it a bad bond.

I'd be curious to see these two different tests side by side and see what the results would be.

As far as your cocobolo panels go I think going with epoxy in this instance is the safe bet.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Just to be safe, I think I'm going to go with epoxy since it looks like a better bond. Thanks for the advice!

When I did my humidors I used the Unibond 800 with no issues, even on the Cocobolo one.

BTW where did you come across the Cocobolo venneer? About a year ago I was on a mad hunt for the stuff, I found about 60sqft at Certainly Wood and bought it all.

Still on the lookout
