I'm veneering a 30" diameter tabletop with shop cut oak veneers. The veneer thickness is about 3/32" but it will be finish sanded to less that 1/16". Substrate is 3/4" mdf.

Is oak required for the bottom, or can I use a lesser wood such as poplar or alder?

Jack,

You're fine using a different species. More important that its the same thickness, also use the same glue both sides.

Thanks, Darryl. It makes sense to use left over wood when possible. Another question, though. Why is it necessary to use the same glue on both sides? What happens if I use epoxy on the top and yellow glue on the bottom?

Jack,

Different glues shrink greater than others. Yellow glue will have high shrinkage and epoxy will have just about none. The differences between these two glues will definitely cause warpage if used on opposite sides.

That wasn't what I really wanted to hear, Darryl, especially since I have already done it. Time for damage control, I guess. Will it be adequate if I rout out the back veneer and glue in another veneer with epoxy?

Jack,

Right now I would sit and wait. Give it a few days to fully cure and then see how it looks. This is a table top which means you have an apron and under supports which you can screw the top down to. If all you have is a mild bow then I wouldn't be too concerned. Its something like a free swinging inset door that is far more critical.

From what I gather it was the back side that was glued up with yellow glue. This should result in your table top bowing up in the middle, which pulling down in this way is easier than bowing up at the edges.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Thanks again, Darryl. I'm a novice when it comes to veneering so your advice is greatly appreciated. I can cut a circle of 3/4" oak plywood the same diameter as the inside of the apron and screw it to the underside of the top. Do you think that will do the job?

Jack,

I think I would be more inclined to put an X brace across the apron. Basically this would be two pieces of stock about 3/4" thick and the same width as the apron crossing each other in the middle. I think this would be stiffer and hold the top down better than the plywood disc.

Sincerely

Thanks, Darryl. I'll do as you suggest. This has been quite a lesson. I'll try to ask the questions before I veneer next time.
