Doing a burl veneered round tabletop that is going to require many passes of the router with a trammel. The design has the veneer coming to points in the center so no hole can be used. I figured I would double stick a block in the middle for the trammel to attach to. My concern is removing that block. I typically use a strong double stick that turners use. Of course there is a little fear of it moving but I don't think that will happen. So after all the successful routs now i would need to remove the block without tearing up any veneer. One thought was to hand plane and scrape it off. I read about someone using naphtha to loosed the tape ? What are your thoughts ? Thanks Joel

What is the substrate, what adhesive was used between the burl veneer and the substrate, and how long since the adhesive was applied?

It's been a few days since you asked, but maybe this will help.... You could rig an overhead armature from which you could push the pivot pin onto the table top. The ceiling of your shop might work, depending on its height. Otherwise, I can envision a sort of gear puller thing constructed of framing lumber that would clear the edges of the table. It would need to be sturdy enough to resist the force required to keep the pivot in place. As long as the area of the pivot is sufficiently large, no damage ought to be done to the veneer. No glue, no sticky tape, no mess to clean up at all. Jeff

Use a apiece of fiber board to make a circle and use the circle and a top bearing router bit . The circle of course is your template. Or transfer your lines from the top to the bottom of the table and rout it from the bottom side.

There is a way to do it with a simple vacuum jig. Go here, https://www.vacupress.com/videos/ And choose the video on vacuum clamping. Right near the end is a demo of the circle cutting jig.

I read through the responses and the reason none of this suggestions work is this table needs 5 passes with the router to complete the top... Each time the router is used it is critical that it be in the exact same place and these passes are done over a period of days.. There is one perimeter of a different veneer. There is routing the circle to apply the 1 3/4" solid perimeter. There is finishing off off the solid perimeter and then there are 2 passes to add inlays... Before I started this process I ran the test with double stick tape and Naphtha... This is clearly the best solution. The tape holds strong and then the Naphtha when drizzled under the block is done it attacks the tape glue and easy release. I hope to be taking the block off at the end of today...

Hope it turned out well. I would have wanted to make a glueup with some scrap from the center veneer, stick down a piece with the double stick tape, and then seven days later try to remove with naptha to test the tape and naptha removal before risking the actual work.

Naphtha worked like a charm... I use nice double stick tape found at Woodcraft called spectape.. It's expensive but very much worth it. Very strong and once you pull the parts apart it's not that hard to get the tape off. This block was on the veneer for almost 2 weeks.. Not a chance it was going to budge and when I drizzled the naphtha around the perimeter which I beveled the block practically fell off.
