Hello All

I'm new to the forum & veneering vacuum pressing in general.

Just getting my feet wet at this point, But I'm also looking for information on setting up a vacuum pump/press system.

The pump unit I'm planning to use is from an old Speedaire air compressor which is pretty much the same as a Gast 4VCF

I haven't really found too much usable information on this style pump being used in a vacuum pump system.

Seems like a fine vacuum pump. Nothing in particular about this pump that you need to be aware of. Start by getting a gauge, so you know what vacuum it can pull, and a inline filter so you dont suck chips and dust into the vacuum chambers which would compromise the vacuum.

I've already tried connecting it up to a gauge (temporally) using some nylon tubing & fittings left-over from a plumbing project. I realize the fittings & tubing were probably not ideal for the pump, But I wanted to confirm that my (garage-sale air compressor) can also function a vacuum pump.

I connected the pump up to a small 3gal. tank with a gauge & it pulled 27" Hg in under a minute, Probably about 40 seconds!

Well, you’re pulling plenty of vacuum so you’re good there. You just need to get a filter to protect the vacuum chambers and you should be all good. On a side note, you really dont need a reserve air tank.

I'm planning to make it into a auto cycling system using a solenoid valve controlled by a vacuum switch. All the examples I've seen on the internet have a reserve tank?

The main thing I'm confused with is plumbing the two separate heads to the solenoid valve or valves! I know I should use a in-line filter to protect each pump head, But I'm not sure on the plumbing after the filters!
Should I "T" the two 1/4" lines from the filters together then add a solenoid valve, Or use a separate solenoid valve after each filter & then "T" them together?

I've searched here & through Google, But I haven't seen a set-up like mine?

May I suggest you skip the solenoid and have the vacuum switch turn on and off the motor. It would look like this...first thing from bag to pump would be the inline filter, then vacuum switch, then a back check valve, then tee off to both vacuum heads.
