Subject : Double Sided Tape?

I have a considerable amount of resawn Sapele at about 0.080" - 0.110' th.
My plan was to now run it through the drum sander many times to get to final thickness of about 1/16" - holding it down to flat boards with double sided tape. However, some of the strips have cupped and the tape I am using is not strong enough to hold them flat.

Can someone please recommend a very strong tape that does not leave any residue?
There does not seem to be a lot of agreement on the web about this.

Thank you,
Dave

Personally, I like 3M tapes. Have always had great success with their products. Sometimes I want a tape that is extremely aggressive and other times I want one that releases easily. They seem to have all variations. Find a local 3M dealer, they should be able to help you get the tape you want.

I've got some double sided tape from 3M that would probably work. However it sticks so well that you couldn't remove the sapele from the board. And, even worse, this tape is too thick. Used in strips, it would cause the veneer to be held above the carrier board's surface. You would see the telegraphed results after sanding. I would try to un-cup the veneer by dampening the concave side and putting it into the vacuum press for a spell. Take it out of the press just prior to sanding. The use of a carrier board will not be necessary. If this approach doesn't work, then simply rip the veneer in half to make narrower strips. That will make the cupping less severe and sandable. For anyone interested - I just received three different samples of double sided tape.

The first one did not work well.
The second one looks very promising - but I have only used one roll at this point. And I have ordered 8 more rolls, so will know more soon. It sticks very well to wood and yet releases very cleanly. It does hold on though and it takes some force and care to separate the boards after maching. The roll I used as a sample was from Shurtape and was tape # DS 154. It was 2" wide x 25 yards.
The third sample I have not tried yet - but will.

Thanks again,
Dave

Lacquer thinner may soften the adhesive to make it easier to remove the veneer from the carrier board. If you find a double stick tape that works, try just putting one row across the leading edge of the veneer. Might not be necessary to stick down the entire leaf of veneer.

Spectape... I get it at Woodcraft. A little bit pricey but the roll lasts a long time if you don't go crazy with it, which you don't need to. Been using it for 20 years. Naphtha can be used if you are concerned about tearing wood grain or veneer. Works like a charm.

On their website I saw two different versions of Spectape. Which are you using?
