What is the best tool for cutting overhanging veneer? Is using a flush trimming router bit suitable?

Also which is the best hand tool for cutting veneer sheets? Any tips for making it easier to cut would be appreciated.

I like a downcut spiral with a bottom bearing to flush cut edges. Are your veneer sheets raw or paper back? Different tools for different products.

Raw Aaron - I've not tried the paper backed yet. I'm still in my first week of veneering so I do really appreciate you coming back to me

Regards

Paul

First week! That's great. I mainly work with burls and what works for me for cutting is a good fixed blade utility knife. There's many styles to choose from to find what fits your hand and the blades are cheap to replace. After cutting I gently sand the
edge with a rectangular aluminum bar that has150 grit sandpaper on it. What is your veneering project?

Hi Aaron - at the minute it is just lid inserts on wooden boxes. I have been Woodturning for years and now the house is full of round things. I thought that ai had better make some square and rectangular items.

I suppose the inserts are about 8" x 6" or possible a bit larger. I have made a few walnut burr inserts but the veneer is overhanging by 1-2mm. The veneer is on nicely and I just didn't want to mess things up at this stage.

Regards

Paul

In your situation can you make your substrate oversized then press your veneer to that and then fit your insert by trimming it with a table saw? I rarely like to press onto an exact sized substrate. Sometimes it's necessary though.

On a second veneer saw I taped a piece of dense cardboard, such as the bottom of a pad of note paper, slightly less than 1/16" thick to the bottom of the veneer saw blade as a spacer. I'll simply saw away the overhanging veneer, then sand flush with various grits adhered to flat pieces of wood.
