I am building 3 flat panel doors for a sideboard out of quartered white oak, and want to do some kind of diamond pattern. Also they are rectangular not square. Say I need 3 sheets per quarter section that means 12 per door x 3 equal 36. Can I get away with still doing the pattern with maybe 9 sheets and having each quarter a little different? Each quarter will be less than 12".

Mike,

Boy, its been a while since I've done any diamond matching but if I remember right the matching does not come out right if the pattern is not square, rectangles don't work.

If I remember diamond matches, there are reflected seams, like book matches? If so, having each quarter different may be very noticeable. Given the time and overall materials cost for a sideboard, is it worth the risk of poor matches?
If each door will have a diamond pattern, won't each door require just part of a set of 36 leaves, so that more than one door pattern can be obtained from a set of 36 leaves of veneer?

Mike,
Diamond pattern and diamond match are two different types of cuts. The door below was a set of two witches would have made one full diamond shape in the field. Is this the look you are thinking about? Tom

Thanks Tom & Craig,
Originally I was thinking of the pattern you sent there Tom.
But know I am thinking the central pattern you sent Craig, with the grain going parrelel with the edges of my door. I ordered 12 pieces of qtr. WO & I'll have it tomorrow so I hopoe to figure it out then.
Mike
