I'm sure this has been answered before, but is there a rule of thumb on the maximum thickness for veneer before the veneer overpowers the glue? A client proposes 1/4" walnut over 1" ply. I have veneered 1/8" material successfully.

Tim,

1/4" is definitely over the top. Even 1/8" can be a little much in some circumstances. I recommend 3/32" or less with 1/16 being ideal.

How about veneering the 1/4" walnut over solid poplar? It would seem that the poplar and walnut can move together so there shouldn't be any reason for the walnut to break loose. Can I get away with 1/4 walnut on one side only?

My 1st thought would be to glue the 1/4" walnut to straight-grained walnut substrate so the face and substrate have the same shrinkage rates, but even then I'd want to allow both to reach equilibrium with my workshop environment for a month before beginning. I'd still warn the client in writing that splitting of the 1/4" is possible and not your responsibility if it occurs.

Has the client explained why he wants such a thick layer of walnut over a substrate?

Tim,

There's a piece of this picture you have not mentioned which is, how big is this panel you want to put the 1/4" walnut on? As a panel gets bigger the expansion and stability issues become more important. A 10" x 16" panel is a whole different story than a 3'x 6' panel.

As far as 1/4" walnut on top of solid poplar, yes this would be OK, but not just one sided, it will warp. Again this becomes more critical as the panel gets bigger.

I definitely agree with Steve about educating the customer although sometimes this is more difficult that making the furniture itself. Do they understand that 1/4" walnut on top of solid poplar is much less stable than 1/16" walnut on a good substrate? As Don asked, why the 1/4" in the first place?

This thread is bringing up a curious issue of the validity of client request. I think it's the duty of the artisan, whether it be woodworker, cabinetmaker or whatever, to have the ability to explain why a process is not recommended as well as refusing to take the said project on. It makes no sense to risk veneering 1/4" walnut onto a substrate, especially onto a solid wood substrate in my opinion, knowing the chances of splitting and/or checking over time are quite high. Why would one, including the client, consider this, knowing the risks involved? IMHO....one either suggests using 1/16" walnut veneer ( an excellent option) or perhaps shifting towards a solid walnut piece.

Thanks for the replies. It seems the customer has a sentimental attachment to the boards. I think they came from a tree on his property. Although I have already ordered Unibond, would epoxy be a better bet in this situation?
The finished piece will be 90" L X 15-17" wide, attached to a wall by 3- 14" braces which may or not be able to resist warping.

now that I know the width I would recommend you glue this to stave core material. I regularly glue 1/4 inch material to solid wood but in a stave core process. I'll try to load a picture . i wouldn't recommend plywood particle board or mdf.

update:""::;;;; picture wouldn't l;oad no matter what size i reduced it to
