I am looking for a source for Medex in NE Florida. I want to use it for a dry bar counter with a decorative veneer top. I am concerned that regular MDF might get wet (e.g., moisture between the wall and back of the counter if something is spilled) and fail.

I tried "googling" medex, but all I seem to get are medical companies with the same name. Who makes this stuff?

Thanks,

Charles

You can also look around for Extira.

It's the same product, but marketed with a different name.

I would just call a lumber/plywood supplier, and have them order it.

There's no place locally that carries it, so that's what I have to do.

Be ready for a minimum order, though.

hi charles,

you would think that with the high moisture climate in fla that it would be a standard product.

long shot is home depot. they may not stock it but will special order.

you can also try reaching out to your local cabinet shops to see if they can refer you to anyone.

try using an AC marine plywood.

Craig,

My concern with the AC marine plywood is that any inconsistencies would telegraph through the decorative veneer.

Are my concerns real or unfounded?

Charles,

Try Dixie Plywood. They have a number of branches in Florida. www.dixieply.com

Thanks, guys.

I have a query in to Dixie Plywood. They may carry Extira. I will see.

Meanwhile, I found a local (within an hour) distributor who is ordering two sheets of 3/4" Extira for me.

Thanks!

Charles

Just wanted to offer my experience with this product. We did a commercial hospital job we made all of the countertops out of medex with p lam laminate. The staff constantly splashed and left sitting water on the tops. It seeped in around the bowls and swelled the medex like crazy. It all fell apart as if it was just MDF. We later tested a piece by soaking it in a bucket of water. Same result, swelled and fell apart. We wont use it again. We now use Marine plywood with no problems. You may want to test it yourself before using. My experience may save you some headaches.

hi charles,

If its an AC sanded plywood, rotary cut, you should be ok. I would still two ply your lay up.
