A customer would like to save money ( we all know how this goes) and veneer over a flat home depot door with curly makore.Do you guys and girls see any problems with that? I believe the substrate of the doors are luan.Could the door implode under full vacum? Do I need to veneer a cross veneer first? Thanks Matt

I'd say to first put the door into the bag at full vacuum to see what happens to it. Better to crush the door without also ruining the fancy veneer. I'd also say yes to the cross banding. Alternating grain direction is standard procedure, I can't see why this situation would be any different.

Your client sounds like he's wanting you to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. The doors may indeed look very nice on completion but will always ring hollow. As indeed they will be, feel, and sound.

Matt, do us all a favor and let us know how this turns out. I've had a friend or two request the same of me, and I've not been sure what to tell them.

Matt,

If this is a common hollow core door your talking about vacuum pressure will crush it like a pancake, no matter how low you turn down the vacuum level.

Sincerely

Yes, I have tried this, and Darryl is right, the door crumpled immediately before even half vacuum was reached. (My customer was with me and was suitably impressed, even if he did lose a door)
