Has anyone any experience with the blocker additive using Unibond on maple, which the adhesive can stain yellow? Wondering if the blocker eliminates the staining?

Don,

This was one of the reasons we developed the blocker.

Anthony Buzak is a furniture maker that uses a fair amount of maple in his work, especially curly. I was told through a friend of his that he was quite please with how the blocker worked with maple.

I suggest you go to his web site and ask him personally by email. http://www.anthonybuzak.com/ He's a very friendly guy and I think would be happy to tell you his experience. Just mention that I sent you to him.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Don contacted Anthony at my suggestion and Anthony emailed me a copy of his response to Don. I asked him if I could post his response on this thread and he said fine. I thought folks would like hearing the answer to Don's question.

Hi Don,

I love the Unibond Blocker stuff! I use it at the suggested mixture, I think it is 10% by weight, and no more bleed through....at all. When I first got it, as a test, I slobbered the glue on and it didn't come through. I use a lot of quilted maple and use to swear at Darryl when I opened my vac press and saw all of the bleed though. Those days are over. Works good on cherry and burls too.

I'm planning on veneering with figured pear. I was just wondering this evening about bleed through with the unibond and possibly blocking with hide glue sizing. I plan to hammer veneer with hide glue on some portions of the piece. I'm thinking that the unibond blocker may be useful?

Bruce,

Im confused by your question. The first half sounds like you want to size the veneer with hide glue and glue with the Unibond 800. The second half seems that you want to glue with hide glue and possibly use the blocker with this glue?

Please clarify.

Sincerely

I was considering sizing my veneer with hide glue first (rather than blocker)to prevent bleed through and then pressing the taped up veneer using unibond in the vacuum press. I have some more complicated portions of the piece which I think will be easier to hammer veneer (using hide glue). I ran a test this afternoon with the unibond and got some bleed through in the curl without sizing and I'm running some tests this evening to see if the unibond will stick to the veneer with hide glue size. I also just ordered some blocker from you and am thinnking, based on the comments above, that using the blocker will be the way to go. I am also wondering if I should be concerned about color differences between the unibond adhered veneer verses the hide glue hammer veneered surfaces. Thanks for your help.

Bruce,

Now I get the picture. As I have not personally sized veneer with hide glue I cant say for sure how Unibond will perform but I my guess will be that it will bond find.

As far as the color difference between the Unibond and hide glued areas, I dont think you will have any issues provided the veneer is properly scraped and sanded.

For the benifit of others it would be great if you post back on how the Unibond took to the hide glue sized veneer.

Sincerely

Just checking back on this posting as well. I did a couple tests with hide glue sizing and it appeared to work fine. No bleed through with the unibond and decent adhesion. I ended up using the blocker, though, as it was simpler than sizing everything with hide glue. The blocker worked well and prevented the bleed through. I think I did end up with a slight color difference between my hide glue hammered pieces and the unibond pieces.

This was my first veneered project and if I did it again, I'd do it differently of course. I used unibond in the press (both traditional and vacuum) on flat and curved panels and then hammered veneer onto the desk legs and butted this veneer up to the unibonded panels. I think the next time I might use unibond on my flat and distinct parts like the desk lid and top, but would hammer all parts coming in contact with other hammered parts. This would have eliminated glue up issues, veneer joint issues etc. In the end I think I got slightly better veneer glue ups with the traditional press. Perhaps I was not vacuuming correctly? I also think I may have had a slight reaction to the unibond. I wore a respirator when mixing and applying. I prefered the hide glue in this respect.
