Martin,

I checked out the speaker and from what I can see Im pretty sure its not veneer at all. Some kind of paint finish. I could be wrong but it looks like paint not veneer to me.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

I agree with Darryl. This is almost certainly not a natural veneer. It looks like what Macassar Ebony WOULD look like if it had a burl, but I've never seen a burl of that tree. There are some very similar burls that have a similar grain, but with different colors. Olive Ash burl comes to mind, which has patterns resembling the one you mention, but with colors of dark brown and very light brown or off-white. Take a look at this link to see what I mean: http://www.designsbyderwood.com/site2images/lot712,713.jpg
The effect can be even more spectacular when consecutive sheets are matched together to make a "bookmatch", like this: http://www.designsbyderwood.com/site2images/lot712,713book.jpg

Martin, It looks like some of the reprocessed veneer that comes from Alpi in Italy. It's hard to tell from the pic but if it is a painted finish the figure would be continuous around the edges. Whereas veneer would probably not be.Check out Brokkside veneers. It looks like a Walnut burl they have.

Earl,

You have a good point there. I went back and took a closer look and your right the pattern does not go over the angles which you would think it should with paint. I still have never seen the remanufactured veneers in such broad patterns though. Its usually much tighter.

Sincerely

Yes it's real wood. I went to a hifi store and took a closer look on the speakers and it's veneer with a highgloss coating.
I went to brookside veneers and the oliveash burl looks very much like it.
I'll try to contact B&W (the speaker manufacturer) and see if the want to give me a hint on what it can be.
Thanks for your answers!

Regards
Martin

martin that looks like a died veneer that is most likey from europe...

....the patter that it has is because the veneer is rotary cut and not flat cut like we usually buy...

they put the log between centers and turn it as it is cut
