I agree with Darryl. This is almost certainly not a natural veneer. It looks like what Macassar Ebony WOULD look like if it had a burl, but I've never seen a burl of that tree. There are some very similar burls that have a similar grain, but with different colors. Olive Ash burl comes to mind, which has patterns resembling the one you mention, but with colors of dark brown and very light brown or off-white.
