Subject : New guy question on if flattening is needed

I have two lengths of spalted Beech. It has slight 2 or 3 1/4" high waves running with the grain. Can I expect the vacuum press to flatten them out?
Or, should I attempt to flatten.
I can run a test, but a tip could save me some work.
Thanks.

My rule of thumb, which I probably learned from Darryl, is if the wrinkling makes taping seams together difficult, flatten. 2" high sounds HUGE.

Sorry, I wrote that poorly. There are 2 or 3 wrinkles that are 1/4" high.

With wrinkles that small I cannot see there would be any need to flatten. Can you tape the sheets together and get the taped joint lined up well?

I went ahead and did a test with it.
Problem was that after smoothing the veneer on the glue covered substrate, within minutes it curled up like crazy. Splits opened allowing curl everywhere.
Looked like a plate of potato chips.
I covered it with a plastic sheet and the 3/4" melamine and bagged it up.
The press worked great. Came out flat.
The remaining veneer is not full of splits like the short cut off from the end. I should be ok.
Thanks

Any cracks/splits in veneer I secure with 3/4" veneer tape before assembly, as I do book and slip match seams. If wary, I may cover the entire show face using 2" veneer tape.

Don’t take the time to smooth the veneer out onto the substrate. Once you place the veneer on the glue covered substrate get it in the bag ASAP. The bag will smooth the veneer out just fine.
