Glad to see this forum is still around. It's been a while for me. I am restoring an old pool table. The top is made of particle board covered with plastic laminate. (curved)

I have removed the laminate, it pretty much just popped off. Now I need to remove the old contact cement, and fix the defects in the particle board before applying a two-ply. I was thinking of elbow grease and mineral spirits.

So my question is, should I try to apply some sort of sealer? Would it affect the unibond? Would epoxy be better?

TIA, Carl

Don't hav a clue what effect residual contact cement in something as open as particle board might have on gluing on a two ply. May be stupid question, but would it be an option to replace the particle board with new substrate and then veneer? Would be a shame to put so much time and materials cost into veneering the particle board and down the road have problems.

Don,

Thanks for the suggestion. I considered that. But I came to the (perhaps incorrect) conclusion, that reworking the old parts would be less work.

So far I have been able to scrape and then sand the old cement off. I have worked mostly with plywood, mdf and hardwood. This is my first time with particle board. The stuff is pretty flimsy.

I've decided to make a jig to hold these pieces at an angle to help geting pressure on the bottom edge. Also think I will make my two-ply with the grain running in the same direction, lengthwise.

Am I crazy

Wow, 50K limit is pretty small. Three pieces, one still has the contact cement, one scraped, the other sanded.

Opinions?

If you can get enough of the contact cement off so the glue has good absorbency, then you'll be fine. I would not try to seal the surface as this will only inhibit glue penetration.

Is there an advantage to using two layers of veneer with the grain running the same direction in each?

Darryl,

I was surprised how easy it was to get the old cement off. Thanks for your input.

Don,

My reasoning is it will be easier to get it to conform to the round over edge. Opinions welcome!

Thanks, Carl
