It's been a long time, but I am ready to get back to some fun hobbies, and what fun would it be, if I wasn't trying something new?

I am planning a subwoofer. Curved top, such as a cathedral radio. 18" wide, 12" deep, 27" tall. Internally braced. I would like to use a single two ply to create the illusion of a one piece side and top.

Ok so is my bracing enough to survive a vacuum bag? Do I need to get a bladder? Can I save the $100 for the bladder and do internal bracing? Make my own bladder.

Design done with google sketchup. Pretty good tool. And a lot of help in visualizing this project!

Darryl, what would you do?

TIA, Carl

Carl,

I would put one more horizontal brace shelf between the bottom and the one at the radius point.

I am assuming that you will use 2 sheets of 3/8" bending ply over the radius. You want a total of 3/4" as you only have one arched brace in the middle.

Are you suggesting only one more horizontal brace that is permanent?

Yes the top was going to be formed with 2 x 3/8" pieces of bending ply (luan?) with a veneer in between to add an extra glue line. Front and back are going to be 2 x 3/4". I know I will put backer veneer on the front, back and side. Do you think I would need to also do that for the top? That's my plan so far.

So do you think I could use temporary bracing? Additional bracing in the final product affects volume. Right now I am 2.05 ft^3. Adding braces, I will have to increase a dimension. No problem right now since I have not cut anything.

If I was to go with temporary bracing. Could I wedge in pieces of Styrofoam? I lent out my veneering video many years ago.

Thanks for your input Darryl,

Regards, Carl

I added a top brace, based on the brace at the radius. Also added a brace half way down. Still over 2 ft^3.

Comments & Criticisms!

Carl,

I think you are fine now but you will still need to temporarily close up the openings in the front and back so the bag will not suck into these areas. The big one in the back will need some bracing behind it as well.

Yes I was planning on making fitted inserts.

I had to veneer the curved apron for a Chippendale pier table a few months back. Try as I might I couldn't get the vacuum bag to seal with the apron inside. Instead I pressed the veneer with hand clamps and a piece of 1/8" melame fiber board as the platten. Worked great.
