Subject : Trim the veneer or trim the panel?

The sides of a bookcase I'm building will be frame and panel. The 43"x10"panel will be 1/2" mdf, veneered (both sides) with curly walnut using unibond 800.

I'm wondering if I should cut the MDF to finished size, and the veneer 1/2" larger than the MDF. Then, after glue up trim the veneer flush to the panel. Should I use a flush trim bit, or a utility knife?

OR...

Should I make the MDF wider than finished size, apply veneer with no overhang, and then cut the entire panel to size on the table saw?

Any other suggestions?

(I know some of this is covered in Darryl's video which I purchased and watched a few years ago. Unfortunately, now I can only find the case to the DVD!)

Mitch,

You can do it either way but I really prefer making the entire panel and veneer oversized and trimming it down after pressing. I find overhanging veneer fairly fragile and keeping the veneer and panel the same size avoids this problem. Also, if the veneer slips when you overhang, since you cant overhang much with a vacuum press, there is a risk of the veneer not ending up covering the panel.

Mitch,

Seeing its a frame with I assume panel's inserted into a groove, doesn't really matter which approach you use. The added work with trimming is that if the layup consists of more than one piece of veneer you have to trim the panel from the center line out so you have a symmetrical figure on the panel. if you trim the panel to size then veneer all you have to be concerned with is centering the veneer on the panel.

Thanks for the info. I should have mentioned its a single sheet of veneer and I'm using clamps and cauls.

For pressing, I plan to use 3/4" MDF or plywood sandwich and caul about every 8 inches made from 2x4s. Should I put a slight "arc" on the cauls, or are they short enough (12" that I shouldn't need to worry about that?

Mitch,

should be no need to bow the cauls with 12 inch wide panels. if you do a lot of clamping that way you may want to invest in some bow clamps. www.bowclamp.com. there the cat's a$$

Holy smokes. That Bowclamp is pretty cool.

I've made those bowclamps before. Never thought about outsourcing and selling them!

That gets the award for simplest idea to make a small living off of!

Here's some steps on how to make curved cauls with a few swipes from a hand plane. Seem pretty simple. I can't see the advantage of the bow clamp.
