How can you avoid walnut burl from turning too dark when finishing. Wipe on Poly's have been my preferred finish, but would I minimize the darkening efect if I lightly bleeched the venneer after the vacuum clamping process and would it also help if I used a System 3 Epoxy Resin before applying the wipe on poly?

I suspect it is the yellowing effect of the poly that is adding the color you do not want. Target EMtech 2000 does not add any color and there are many other similar finishes that will not add any color. I spray it on, but it says you can use a brush also. I think the light bleaching trick could be a recipe for disaster if you have not done so in the past, and the epoxy is an absolute nightmare to work with for finishing purposes.

I am sure you will get lots of other opinions.

Brad,

I would like to make a minor correction to your post. Target EM2000 DOES add a slight straw color to the finish.

However, Target's 9000 and 9300 products are clear and do NOT add color.

Brad,

I spent a day at the Target Coatings facility earlier this month and learned a lot. The straw-like color may not appear right away, if I remember correctly. But, it is in the specification.

Try an acrylic lacquer or a CAB lacquer (cellulose acetate butyrate).

all are considered "water white" lacquers. neither are high solid content but both produce a crystal clear finish. when you look into a gallon can you can see the bottom of the can.
Ditto the bleaching as well.

Craig, Brad and Ckurak:

I thank all of you for your suggestions and I plan on making up practice squares to see which works best. I agree, I think the bleach route may lead into a larger problem, again I thank all of you
