I'm building a blanket chest and I have 4 panels that I want to press. Can I glue them and press them all in one stack? The panels are roughly 16" square. Thanks

This a great question! Assuming the answer is yes, how thick a caul is needed between panels?

Wow, I'm glad you posted this question. I assumed that there was no need for cauls beetween panels, just plastic. I'm learning something every post.

A lot depends on how much veneer tape is on the lay ups. If its just simple joint taped seams then stacking one on top of the other will be fine. And of course something in between each panel would be needed.

a good source for caul material is going to be your panel material supplier. not places like home depot, more of a dedicated woodworking supply house. ask them if they have any cover sheets. these are the top sheets use to protect full pallets of plywood, melamine and so on.

Or marlite from home depot or lowes. best caul material you can use. it's a 1/4 inch masonite with a white phenolic face. good for both flat and radius work.

Craig,

What does the Marlite run a sheet? I use 1/4 melamine and spray it with TopCoat and NEVER have any issues with sticking even if glue gets on the face of the panel. Now without TopCoat the Melamine can stick. I get quite a long life out of the mel and have quite a bit in matched cauls.

Earl,

I'm paying $9.00 per 4x8 sheet at home depot. we also have a place here called bargain outlet and I can sometimes get it at $7.00.

didn't know they stopped making topcoat. I never had to put anything on the marlite.

if you have a source for plain laminate, standard or vertical grade that's is also a great caul material. cheap stuff like basic white or even discontinued patterns that the supplier can't move.

Craig,

Thanks for the info on the Marlite. I guess that sentence about the TopCoat didn't come out the way I intended. TopCoat is still readily available. What I meant, is the Mel can stick, if it's not sprayed with TopCoat.
