Here is the panel I am veneering
http://www.jlfurniture.com/Contact/samples/samples.html

I did a dry run today in the bag... looked pretty good except along the edge at the end of the curve.... no matter how many time we tried to adjust the bag that edge was not being pressed... I should have left that end longer and then trim it, but I did not. One thought is to glue on an extension... I think that will help, but I am concerned because the curve is hand shaped that if there are any irregularities that it might not get pressed perfectly. I am using 1/8 ply as the caul over the chestnut burl veneer. So if my extension solves the edge problem, my other thought is maybe using some sort of different caul... I did an experiment gluing two sheets of maple veneer together with yellow glue and thought that might make for a more flexible caul to glues down any irregularities ??
Or is there another thought on cauls...

I also experimented pregluing the chestnut to another veneer and I like how it came out.. so I will probably do that first...

So any and all advise on getting this glued down will be helpful..

I was watching the curve lamination video, and it looks like of I go for the two ply approach I can skip the caul and this might help me get better results... ??

You don't explain how you had the assembly placed and supported inside the bag. That explanation will help analyze why the edge isn't getting pressed.

I I were doing this, I have it in the bag with a layer of evacunet in lieu of a stiff lower platen. The bag would then conform to the curve. Under this circumstance, I would expect pressure to be evenly applied over the entire surface, even at the extreme edges.

If the 1/8" ply you are using can conform to the curve, then I don't see any reason to try anything else. I would use some plastic sheeting between the caul and the veneer during actual glue-up.

In the bag without any board,... just the bag, and as the pressure starts helped the bag to conform to the form. The caul was about an 1/8" bigger around all sides... the veneer is only going on the outside curve.
Again the pressure for the most of it looked good in the dry run, except that tiny bit of the edge, which if I had made longer would have been trimmed, (next time)
So what's your thought on pre laminating the veneer, and then glue it to the form with no caul... ?

Dwolf,

I would recommend you add temporary strips onto the edges of your door to get the bag to go a bit further before going over the edge of the veneering surface. I would add a strip 1/2" wide or more. It doesn't need to be perfectly flush with the panel face, just close. Put clear package tape on these strips to keep any glue squeeze out from sticking to them.

This should do the trick.

Dwolf,

I'm a big fan of two ply especially for curved work. Its the approach I would have taken in your situation and, yes, you would not need a cover sheet on top of the two ply. Its not exactly the correct solution for lack of pressure at the edges but the stiffness of the two ply would most likely compensate for the problem you're having. I would still put the extenders on I mentioned in the previous post.
