Hopefully I am not bothering anyone with my ramblings. After sanding off the joints of my crotch veneer project I found they turned out quite a bit better than I initially thought so I am going to try filling them. That part I know how to do, but there are two small areas at the top and bottom where the crotch wood is torn I am not sure what to do. I dont think I have enough material to sand them out, so do I fill them or leave them alone? I fear if I fill them it will destroy their natural appearance. It is only a passage door so I dont think a perfectly smooth finish is mandatory and the natural look may not be too bad?

Wow, another typical "Brad" type project. Jump in with both feet and figure it out as you go. When will I learn?

Thanks
Brad

Brad,

Can you attach a digital close up picture of the problem area so we can have a better sense of it?

I took some pics last night after working a bit more with it. I continued sanding and tried filling a couple areas with a Cherry Filler (not Famo..) It looked pretty good when I washed with Alcohol, but now looking at the closeup pics I am a bit embarassed by the center joint. Here is a link to a slideshow of some shots. I might consider this panel a learning excercise and put it aside. I have all the items on order I need to start over and Craig helped refine my techniques for the next one.

Brad:

Wasn't able to get any pictures at your link. If your question regards some missing surface wood on your veneer, you can glue in a patch pretty easily. Find a small piece of veneer of similar color/pattern slightly larger than the defect. Put a dab of PVA on the defect, then the patch, then a piece of plastic sheet (non-stick) then a smooth block of wood and clamp. After a couple hours, carefully sand the excess of the patch flush with the rest of the veneer. If a clamp won't reach, hold the covering block down with a heavy weight. If the veneer is especially porous and PVA residue might affect finishing, use cyanoacrylate.

For an open seam, use a lighter colored filler material that will dry hard. Then use touchup powders with alcohol cut shellac to "paint" the filler to match the surrounding veneer. If the result isn't good enough, wipe clean with denatured alcohol and start over. My one experience was perhaps my most frustrating woodworking experience, but I was able (eventually) to save a large burl veneered piece.

Brad,

I see the area your talking about, its not that bad. If the surface is flush with the surrounding veneer I would touch up the problem area with magic markers and colored pencils. I've had great success with this method. I always lay down one layer of finish to get the veneer in the color range it will become. This isn't a perfect solution but will at least prevent the defect from standing out.

The best product I've found for touching up is Mohawk's Blendal sticks. They look like wax crayons. Sharpen them up with a pencil sharpener, and use over your finish so that you're matching final colours. Then fix with clearcoat. The colours blend together very easily right on whatever it is you're touching up, so it is amazingly easy to match any colour. Way way way easier and forgiving to use than touchup powders or markers (and I've used them all). And very easy, once you've got the base colour right, to put in grain lines, as you can put a sharp point on these. Highly recommended.
