I'm in need of some moral support and some advice. It seems like every panel I press has some loose spot of veneer. These occur at the edges.... very seldom within the interior of a panel. I always take precaution to get glue rolled out to the edges, but still I seem to miss some place or two. I find the loose spots when applying the edge treatment or when doing the final sanding. So...... am I the only one? Please tell me that this is common. (I'm lookin for some reassurance here...)And... what methods do you use to fix the situation? I usually use a glue syringe and inject white pva or heated hide glue as much as I can, then poke it in with a slim artist"s palette knife. Or, I'll use super glue in some situations where the veneer is obviously loose but not so much that it can be lifted to get the thicker pva or hide glue in.Thanks for your thoughts.Jeff

Personally, I rarely have the problems that you are mentioning.

Are you making your panels oversized and then trimming them down to finished size? When a panel comes out of the bag, I might have some little tiny bits like you describe, but it's usually the very edge or a small overhang which will get trimmed later.

Are you confident that you are using enough adhesive? I like to use a notched trowel to apply my adhesive, and this keeps everything pretty uniform.

Try this...after applying your adhesive, run your finger through the wet adhesive, and you should have enough adhesive to see troughs and ridges that your finger creates.

I'm sure that others have some comments, but my first thought is perhaps not enough adhesive.

Also, what adhesive are you using?

I've had the same experience as Brian.

What adhesive and substrate are you using, and are you using raw veneer?

Jeff,
The first question you are asked is "what glue are you using?". Glues that dry by exposure to air or by evaporation like PVA or Aliphatic Resin tend to be a lttle tricky on the edges. Try something like one of the plastic resin glues.
As for the right amount of glue, Brian's suggestion is a good fail safe. You can also use a low knap 3" roller. But first do this test. If you have the right amount of glue on you panel you should see a bead of squeeze out all around the panel, in some places mayber a little drip. If not ;you do not have enough glue. Most glues allow or even recomend a delay before placing the veneer down. Use this time to make sure your coverage is still good before the veneer is laid down.
Also make sure your top platten is stiff and does hang over you edge more than 3/8".
Good Luck

Well, Bruce, Don, and Brian, you guys must be living cleaner lives then me. I'm using Unibond for nearly everything with substrates of either mdf or birch ply. I use flitch veneer, taped on the show side. Early on in my pressing experience I know that I was shorting the glue, but I thought I had that licked. Maybe not, especially at the edges. Thanks for the replys.

My thoughts are still more glue.

Why not do a couple of test panels and add more glue than what you normally would? See if that does the trick.

Be sure to report back.

Jeff:

Like many others, I use the black foam roller covers to apply the adhesive. I try to use enough glue so that when I draw a finger through the glue a ridge is left on each side. I always roll towards the edge and try to lift the roller just as I reach the edge. My objective is to try to leave a slight ridge of extra adhesive at the edge of the substrate so that the pressed edge is not glue-starved. But I also try to have a slight trimming allowance at each edge of 1/2" or so to remove after the glue cures and the panel is sanded.
