Daryl,
I am making a demilune table and have come to veneering the top step. How would you go about doing it? Would you try to cut the veneer to size before pressing? Would you try to flush trim the veneer after pressing? Could the veneer stand up to flush trimming? Please advise, the top is pretty expensive quilted maple and I don't want to screw it up.

THANKS!!!!

HI JEFF,
IF IT WERE ME I WOULD MAKE MY LAY UP FIRST. IF YOUR SATISFIED WITH THE WAY YOUR LAY UP LOOKS THEN I WOULD TWO PLY THE LAY UP. YOU CAN THEN PRE SAND PRIOR TO PRESSING TO YOUR SUSTRATE. ANY MISTAKES CAN BE CORRECTED PRIOR TO THE FINAL PRESS. IF YOUR DESIGN CAN SUPPORT LEAVING YOUR LAY UP 1/4 INCH BIG THEN FLUSH TRIMMING WILL NOT EFFECT YOUR LAY UP BECAUSE YOU TWO PLIED THE LAY UP. THE DRAW BACK IS YOU HAVE TO TWO PLY THE BACKER VENEER AS WELL.

I TRY TO STAY AWAY FROM FLUSH TRIMMING, INSTEAD I USE MY VENEER SAW TO TRIM OFF THE EXCESS VENEER. WHEN YOUR TOP IS READY TO BE TRIMMED FLIP IT OVER ON THE SHOW SIDE A USE A VENEER SAW TO TRIM THE EXCESS OFF. YES, YOU CAN EVEN TRIM THE RADIUS SIDE . WITH A ROUTER YOUR AT THE MERCY OF A LOT OF VARIABLES. "YOU" HAVE ALL THE CONTROL WITH THE VENEER SAW.

Craig,
Thanks for the info. My question is with a venner saw, it actually has a long straight blade. How can I cut the curve so its perfect with a blade on a radius? I have to put a small band on the radius, so I want to have the band and veneer meet perfectly. Please advise,

Thanks,

Jeff

HI JEFF,
THE VENNER SAW I WAS REFFERING TO IS VERY SMALL WITH THE CUTTING POINT OF CONTACT BEING ABOUT 1/2 INCH. YOU CAN TRIM THE EXCESS VERY VERY CLOSE LEAVING ABOUT 164TH LEFT. THEN USE A STANDARD MILL FILE TO FLUSH IT UP. OR EVEN USE A HARD BLOCK SANDER(PIECE OF WOOD WITH SELF STICK SAND PAPER ATTACHED) TO FLUSH IT UP.

NOT TO SAY TAHT A ROUTER IS UNACCEPTABLE BUT THE LESS VENEER YOU HAVE TO TRIM OFF WITH A ROUTER THE BETTER YOUR SUCESS RATE. THE ONLY TIME I FLUS TRIM IS WHEN I DONT CARE ABOUT THE EDGES. FOR EXAMPLE, FULL 4X 8 SHEETS THAT ARE GOING TO BE CUT FOR CABINET PARTS.

IF YOU DO CHOOSE THE BLOCK SAND METHOD JUST REMEMBER TO KEEP THE BLOCK SANDER SQUARE TO THE EDGE BEING SANDED AS NOT TO ROUND OVER YOUR EDGE LEAVING A VOID IN THE GLUE UP PROCESS.

BASICALLY IT BOILS DOWN TO BETER SAFE THAN SORRY.

IF YOU DO CHOOSE THE ROUTER METHOD, CLIMB CUT FIRST(PULL THE ROUTER TOWARDS YOU) REMOVING MOST OF THE VENEER , THEN MAKE YOU FINAL PUSHING THE ROUTER AWAY FROM YOU.I'VE PROBABLY JUST OPENED A CAN OF WORMS WITH THE SAFETY FANATICS ( SO COME DOWN OFF THE LEDGE BOYS ITS ONLY VENEER NOT SOLID WOOD).

DARYL WAS NICE ENOUGH TO POST SOME OF MY PICTURES IN THE GALLERY SECTION (PAGE THREE) ALL THOSE TABLES WERE DONE USING THE METHOD I DESCRIBED.

AGAIN, BETTER SAY THAN SORRY AND WHY TAKE CHANCES? A VENEER SAW CAN BE BOUGHT AT VENEERSYSTEMS.COM

I just looked at page 3. Holy crap your work is awesome!!!!!!!!!! I can only hope to be that good one day. If that's the kind of work that the people on this forum are doing, I've got no business here!

Jeff,

You have just as much right to be here as anyone else. Were all here to share no matter what our skill level is. Some day you'll be answering the question more than asking them. We all start somewhere.

As far as trimming your veneer on the demilune table I like to veneer the entire table large and then cut down the panel, veneer and substrate together. On the one I made I took a 1/4" piece of masonite and made an exact template of the top. Screwed this template to the underside of the veneered panel, band sawed the top to within a 1/4" of the template and then used a router with a flush trim bit to rout the top flush with the template.

This top had a thin profiled edge that covered the substrate which was applied to this routed top.

In general I like to put a solid edging on my veneered panels, especially table tops as the solid edging protects the veneer from getting damaged. When the veneer goes over the solid trim I feel this is too much of a fragile edge for my liking.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
