I just purchased 104 sq. feet of mahogany crotch veneer and it needs some repair and flattening. I'm just getting in to veneering and do have a vacuum press. I have done a dozen or so successful veneers but haven't worked with any that needed flattening before glue up.

I have a recipe for a solution that David Marks uses and was wondering what you all use. Heres a link to a pic of the bundle I have.

I have some reading to do here yet but wanted to jump right in with this question as I need to get some panels glued up.

Thanks for any help you might offer

hi dewayne,
i use a flattening solution from veneer systems. 33.00 per gallon. swear by the stuff. i do a ton of crotch mahogany table tops for stickley so i have a little know how. if you have a paint sprayer you can use that to spray it on. thats more conservative. it will also close up the splits i noticed in the feather portion. if you go to the gallery section of the vacupress website you'll see some table i made. where did you get the crotch mahogany from?

Dewayne,

Can you tell us what David Marks solution consists of?

Sincerely

Thanks for the information, I got the crotch mahogany veneer from a Ebay store. herzogveneers They seem to have the best deal per sq foot than all others I looked at. They also did a great job of packing it.

The David marks solution consists of
Four parts water;
Two parts glycerine;
One part alcohol and
Two parts plastic-resin glue.

brush on then sandwich between mdf using window screen to prevent sticking together and news paper to soak up water. Apply even clamping pressure and change the paper periodically until dry and flat.

I don't suppose I could do this in the vacuum bag as the moisture needs to evaporate.

I built the V2 venture system from Joewoodworker and have a 4 x 6 bag. The system work like a champ and very affordable provided you have a compressor to support it.

Heres a link to my finished projects photo album so you can come to know a little about what I do with my hobby. I took up woodworking about 7 years ago. http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?folder_id=1534639

Dewayne:

I've used the flattening formula suggested a number of times in this forum:
2 parts white or yellow glue
3 parts water
1 part glycerin
1 part denatured alcohol
I would suggest using a moisture meter before and after applying the flattening solution to know when the veneer has dried sufficiently. A year ago I dried some olive ash burl veneer for 4 days until the paper no longer felt dry, but the veneer was not yet completely dry and buckled as I started taping it together. I was using screening, paper, plywood, cauls and clamps. Next time I am following Darryl's suggestion and clamping in a vacuum press.

You might next time look at veneers offered at www.certainlywood.com I haven't before seen crotch veneer with cracking in the feather like yours. I expect repair will take some time and finessing. Good luck.

Dewayne,

Personally I would substitute yellow glue for the plastic resin and follow the process that Don mentions in his post. If you do a search for "flattening formula" it is listed in detail on this forum. The problem with plastic resin glue is it has shell flour in it that does not dissolve and just gets all over the surface of your veneer.

I looked at your veneer and like Don noticed that is a nasty crack which I don't think you can make disappear. Cracks that develop in the drying process, which is what this looks like, generally cannot be drawn back together very well, especially after flattening. I suggest working around this area or be prepared to do some filling and touch up work after its pressed.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Thanks a bunch for the help folks. This is my first time working with mahogany crotch veneer of this size. and this rough I looked at other suppliers including certainly wood but purchased this for the low price. Oh well you get what you pay for I guess. I don't know if this veneer wasn't dried correctly or what but it came in a bundle of 24 and the whole thing was wavy and cracked. There is enough uncracked areas that I can work around what in not repairable.

Next time I'll follow the recipe using yellow glue as I see what the plastic resin glue leaves behind. I hope this stuff sands off.
