I'm doing a 40" round sunburst pattern with Camphor Burl table top. I want to keep the weight down. One thought is a product called Pluma Ply... Ply core with HDF laminated on both sides. for that I need to drive two hours total to get. Trying to consider my options for local sheet goods. There is Garnica, a nice 3/4" light ply where I can glue two together? But then the grain of the ply is going one way and then I am gluing a sunburst on top of that. Is that a problem ? It is burl and maybe that helps. I can also use a nice apple type ply and glue them together. The weight for that may not be an issue? But it's still not veneering cross grain but does it matter with burl? Hmmmm what other options ? 1 1/2" thick.

I've built light weight table tops by sandwiching xps foam between sheets of ply using urethane adhesive. This is done in a vacuum press. A solid wood edge must be applied to this lamination. No simple task for a round table. You'd still be left with your grain orientation dilemma. Although, I don't see it as a problem. Using an adhesive such as Unibond, the grain of the veneer will stay put as long as the substrate holds together. And to that end, I've had failures of mdf substrate but never one of plywood.

No need to go the foam route.... but thanks for replying. I have mostly used MDF with no problems.

I've decided to go with two pieces of 1/2" ply with two piece of 1/4" mdf.

Have you considered using 1/8”MDF? Would make it even lighter.

They did not have it in stock... I bought Garnica 1/2" ply for the core which is nice and flat and lighter than regular ply.
