Has anyone had issues with bending plywood having uneven thicknesses?
My suppliers in Florida all sell the same 3/8 bending ply, and there have been issues with unevenness throughout the same sheet. This has been causing lows and highs on both the forms and finished products. I can send some pieces through my wide belt, and have considered surfacing larger pieces on my CNC, but would rather not have to go through the extra step.

Once I used 3/8" bending ply, what some people call "wacky wood," on a project but it did not involve veneering. For bent form veneering I would suggest 1/8" bending plywood, which is more along the lines of a premium plywood. Think I found it at DSI, Inc. Again no experience veneering a bent lamination of this, but I found it to be very well made and consistent.

Yes that's been my experience too. I've just learned to work around it.

The one time I used 3/8" bending ply, I also felt it did not bend consistently on the form.

I have used hundreds of sheets of 3/8" rubberply. Thankfully I have never had an issue with uneven thickness. That would be a major problem. For the past several years, I have been sourcing it from Continental Hardwoods in WA. Once each sheet had some fairly serious lengthwise, cross-grain grooves, so I was offered it at half price. So I ordered as much of it as I could store.

One thing for sure. It is often much too rough to veneer directly over. So I always cover the rubberply with 1/8" Italian bending poplar.

Hey Bob. I've gone through the same process with the wide belt sander. A product that I have recently switched to is Econokore. I believe Daryl has this product on the website. It's 3/8" thick, smooth and uniform in thickness. It's not the answer for every situation but it's a good alternative to bending plywood.
