This may not be the best forum but I thought I'd ask. I want to saw some of my own veneer . I am getting it from very small logs, i.e sumac 5" diameter. It's got a lovely yellow color & in partiuclar I have some crotch stock & want to know if I can cut it now, when my guess is the emc is 13 to 20% or should I wait until winter when it will be much lower?

Anything much over 10% moisture content in going to shrink. urea will hold it but it will not stay flat.

I've read that commercial veneer mills soak the logs in hot water ponds until the moisture content is high enough, then slice and kiln dry the veneer. So I'm not sure you should wait to fell the log and slice the veneer. Of course, the veneer will need to be closer to 7-8% moisture content before using it, I would expect. It would be horrible to glue it down and then have it develop shrinkage cracks as it dries.

I've heard that's how they do it. I was just going to sticker it & air dry it but i was afraid it would warp like crazy but I'm upgrading my BS so I'll just have to try it
thanks

I think your good to cut it and sticker it. I would just clamp the stickered bundle to help hold it flat while it finishes drying.
