Hi folks,

I´m about to build a Leather Top desk, and gluing the leather onto a veneered panel is something I´ve never done before. The glue that comes with the leather is similar to wallpaper paste. I thought I would spread the glue on the panel, put the leather on top, smooth it out and put it in the vacuum press for a couple of hours.
However a friend was suggesting that there could be a problem with bleed through since the glue is soaked into the leather, has anybody ever done this ?
It might not be necessary to use a vacuum press at all, I just thought it might result in a better surface.

The only person I've met who has glued leather to desktops uses hot hide glue exclusively. I'd make several practices glueups even at the cost of extra leather, especially if the adhesive can't easily be removed and glued over like hide glue can.

I would just weight it down as opposed to vacuum pressing. hot hide requires hammering, or rubbing the hammer across the leather which may mar it.

I had one of my customers use a regular yellow glue to bond leather to wood using a vacuum press with good success. Do a test and let it sit outside the press overnight before pulling on the leather.

Thanks a lot, the method with the yellow glue sounds pretty convincing

There is one more aspect I´m not quite sure about, putting the leather on top of a veneered MDF panel, do I have to glue something to the bottom as well in order to prevent warping. I thought that leather would be a bit more forgiving.
