We're doing a library in Quartered White Oak soon..panels will be veneered. Being cautious here and wondering if anyone thinks their would be any issues with backing quartered white oak face veneer with a more utility backer grade such as plain sliced poplar. Should I be considering the quartered face and plain sliced backer as a potential issue over time? Perhaps go with a less expensive quartered species....african mahog perhaps? Does the cut of the log/face veneer dictate the backer veneer? Panels average out to be about 18" wide x 30" tall on 1/2" mdf. As always, any thoughts or comments will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Personally I don't think you need a backer with qtrd oak. I did a side board my self last year & found that the oak veneer from certainly wood was very flat, stable & generally perfect. I was doing diamond matches on mdf & they are still fine. The other guy who does custom sets ups in my area still uses particle core.

Thanks, Mike....but I think I didn't explain myself well. I was referring to the back/rear of the panel, as in a not visible balance sheet, not a 2 ply face system, assuming that's what you're referring to. Sorry if their was any confusion to the post.

Are these panels that will be fixed or free swinging doors?

If they're fixed they put any veneer you want on the back.
