Can you repair a bubble after using Unibond 800? I'm working on some curved drawer fronts using mahogany crotch veneer. The veneer was flattened using a commercial flattening solution, mounted to a backing veneer using Unibond 800 (successfully), and then that was mounted to a solid wood drawer front, again using Unibond 800 in a vacuum press. The veneer had picked up some curl after being mounted to the backing veneer, but definitely not enough to cause problems - or so I thought. After pulling the drawer front out of the vacuum bag, I realized I had a nice big 3" bubble. At this point, I can either salvage the veneer by cutting it off of the drawer front and start again, or try and repair the bubble. Any advice would be appreciated! I'm also wondering what might have gone wrong. I've used Unibond 800 quite a bit, but always on flat panels, and have never run into trouble. This was my first attempt with a curved surface.

I use super glue in a hypodermic needle with great success for situations like yours.

Jack:

For my own benefit, can you elucidate on the steps and bubble? How long after taking the two ply from the vacuum press did you press onto the drawer front? Were you able to conform the two ply easily hand to the drawer front or was there some force needed? Do you suspect the bubble was between the two plies or between the two ply and the drawer front? Was the bubble near an edge or in the center of the veneer? thanks.

Don,

It was at least a week between first laminating the crotch veneer to the backing and then gluing that to the drawer front, but the 2 ply assembly was kept under weight for the entire time, so it was pretty flat. I would compare it to a warped piece of light cardboard. The brittle bubbly quality of the crotch was definitely eliminated by first laminating it to the backing. The bubble was between the 2 ply and the drawer front, and was in the middle. It was not near the edge. I know for sure because I ended up cutting the veneer off of the drawer front. I actually decided to re-do the drawer fronts the old fashioned way - hot hide glue. It worked like a charm!

After 24 hours the Unibond in the two ply was cured and rigid. A week later, how easily did the two ply conform to the curve of the drawer front? If some force was required to make it match the bend, could the process have squeezed glue away from the middle of the drawer front, leaving that area of the bubble glue starved?

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.
Even after a week, the ply was quite flexible. The entire ply assembly was maybe 1/32", and the curve of the drawer front was not severe, so I don't think I was trying to do anything extreme. My only thought was that the veneer was rigid enough to maintain a bubble even under vacuum, and I may not have applied enough glue, although I did coat both sides before assembly. Who knows!
