Subject : Crotch Veneer on Raised Panel

For a proposal I'm interested in an American walnut raised panel with American walnut crotch on the raised portion of the panel. My first thought is that the walnut crotch should be glued to a backer, and the two ply then glued to the front of the panel blank (and a simple walnut two ply glued to the back of the panel blank); after the urea formaldehyde glue cures raise the panel.
This is a cross grain situation if two ply is used, they two front and back two plies trying to hold the solid walnut panel from seasonally expanding and contracting. In this case, the panels likely would be less then 12" wide, but . . .
The potential customer strongly wants a raised panel rather than flat, ruling out MDF or plywood panel. If I get the job, the solid wood panels will be quartered/rift American walnut, which will reduce the amount of seasonal movement. Anyone done this with success?

Personally I think 12" is too wide for even a 2 ply to stop the seasonal movement, but if you go that way try to use quarterd stock. But lets say you do it & then you are going to have unfigured
wood on the area around the crotch anyway.
So, why don't you put the crotch on a substrate & then frame that substrate with solid stock & then cut your profile. Maybe more work but stable for sure.
Or, lay up the entire panel, over a stable substrate, cut your profile & put crotch on it too, then it will look solid. Tedious, yes but a cool look maybe.

I did exactly this years ago...perhaps 20. Crotch walnut veneer on solid quartered walnut panels, then raised. The piece has held up fine. I don't even think I balanced the veneer on the back. Funny how that goes. Today, I'd be much more cautious. Now I typically band around mdf with a mitered frame, veneer both sides, then raise the panel. But, 20 years has gone by and these look fine...go figure. Here's a link to that piece:

Interesting solution. But if banding MDF, do you run long grain around all four edges, or just on the two sides and band with end grain on the top and bottom. The former much easier, but latter would look more realistic after raising, with exposed grain all running top to bottom rather than like a picture frame. Hmm . . .
And if the customer asks for arched top door panel . . .

Don, you're correct that that technique does not lend itself to reproduction type work. Long grain all around is a modern hybrid of that look...works very well but not authentic to period furniture.

Don,

If it was me I would two ply the crotch and then put it on the quartered solid. Yes, there will be a little movement but 12" isnt terribly wide. Plus, you'll be shaping off an 1" or so all around which reduce the main field to 10" or less.

Personally I dont like the mitred look on raised panels.

Thats my take.
