I am building a blanket chest – approx 40” x 16” x 25” tall. The construction is frame and panel – frame is claro walnut –panels are afromosia. Frame is solid wood and panels are veneered on 1/4 bb plywood. I want to line the chest bottom with the smelly cedar but not sure about all the layers. Veneers are home cut 5/64’s. The chest bottom will be 1/4 bb – (or could be 3/8) - will veneer the bottom with some left over walnut – but should the inside also be veneered and then a layer of the cedar (which is the thin store bought t&g stock) or could I just used the cedar as interior veneer? – will be using unibond.
If I used top & bottom veneers and then put in cedar I am thinking I would just spot tack it in with some adhesive. If I use the cedar as veneer (solid glue down in the vacuum press) on the inside might it move about?
Appreciate any information, thoughts and potential problems you might think of.
Hope this makes sense. Many thanks

Jerry

Jerry:
I'm confused as to how the cedar will be used. The bottom of the chest will be a frame and panel assembly, the frame solid walnut and the panels baltic birch. And you plan to resaw the very thin T&G cedar planking into veneer.
Are you thinking of covering also the solid wood frame with cedar veneer, or just the panels? If the former, are you thinking of one taped cedar veneer sheet over the frame and panel bottom?
Is there a reason you don't want to simply use the 1/4" thick planking as is? Recently I built a cherry chest and lined the entire interior with the cedar planking. Over time, the cedar aroma diminishes, and I'm not sure just covering the bottom will provide a very strong cedar effect, whether the planking or the resawn veneer.

a little more clarification - the chest sides are frame & panel - the bottom will just be a core of bb - laid in on top of ledgers along the bottom of the sides. i would like to use some walnut veneer on the underside and then use the 1/4" t&g planking as the top layer (which would be the inside of the chest - do not plan to resaw the cedar - just use it as it comes out of the box. my hesitation is that it is so thick (veneer-wise) that it might be prone to move. so considering veneering both sides of the bb (in order to balance it) and then put down the cedar as kind of a floating surface.

i realize that the "cedarness" effect decreases over time - but have found that either sanding or scraping will bring it back pretty well.

hope this xplains things better - thanks for your help.

It's quite possible that unrestrained 1/4" or even 3/8" baltic birch ply would warp if veneered on only one side. If you screwed it to the ledgers there may be enough to restrain warping, but it's easy and not very expensive to veneer both sides at once in a vacuum bag.
Once the bottom drop in panel is ready, I would't try to glue the cedar planking to the panel. Nails short enough not to show on the underside of the panel aren't going to have any holding power, so I'd just lay the planking in loose.
Without a fixed bottom, the chest is going to be subject to lateral stresses. I'd either securely glue or screw the panel to the ledgers, with the ledgers similarly securely fastened to the carcass, and use at least 3/8" material for the bottom. Just my thoughts.

Jerry,

As long as the cedar is just tacked in place and not glue down I think you will be fine.
