This old dog hasn't pressed two ply before, and friend wants new two ply veneer over old solid strip core (strips about 1.5" wide). Can someone guide me through this? My knee jerk thought (mixed metaphor?) is to roll some urea formaldehyde over the three hole tape side of the backer, and press the show to the backer until the curing glue is rubbery, immediately roll some fresh urea formaldehyde on the substrate and press the two ply to the substrate. Is this correct?
If the first batch doesn't cure fast enough so that I have to make the 2nd pressing the next morning, just lay the two ply on the tabletop overnight or might it get rigid non-flat?
Thanks. Don

Don,

I wouldn't be concerned about the glue drying too much. As long as the two ply is kept mildly weighted it will not curl on you, even if you wait a day or more to press up the two ply onto your substrate. Also, I would put the veneer tape on the outside of the two ply and then have it buried against the substrate.

The thing you want to be sure you don't do is let the two ply sit around un-weighted as it will curl, especially when it first comes out of the press.

The glueup worked out well, probably despite my efforts.

Does anyone apply the three hole veneer tape to BOTH sides of the under veneer? Rolling glue onto the 15" x 30" backer with 5 seams was a challenge because the roller wanted to lift up the seams. I did roll the glue on the side without the 3 hole veneer tape.

Don,

I don't put the three hole tape on both sides but I guess you could. One way to help hold the veneer down for glue rolling is to make the veneer oversized, enough to masking tape the backer veneer to one of the cauls. This way the veneer stays pretty flat when spreading the glue. I keep the masking tape back so only about 1/4" of it is on the veneer and end up trimming this amount off when cutting down the two ply later.

That's why you're "The Man" and I'm just another working stiff.
Hope the snow brought some good skiing, and don't "break a leg."
Thanks and Hello to SWMBO.
