I may be bidding a biedermier style fall front TV cabinet. the front door or fall front will most likely be veneered on the outside with leather on the inside. Dimensions are 37 wide by 34 tall. Should I lay up the venner on both sides of MDF with Unibond then apply leather? Any thoughts? Worried about it warping....

traditionally the leather writing surface on the inside is an inserted panel. veneer both sides of your front, leaving a face frame detail on the inside and insert the leather panel. similar to the art deco desk you did.

the biedermier armoire you did, were those capitals gold leafed or ormolu mounts? if ormolu do you mind me asking where you got them?

Craig

Thanks Craig. I realized after I typed the question that I could probably do it with two panels. If I follow you right, build the frame basically as a frame and panel with the leather panel being inset at the end after finishing? Just glued onto the other panel? I made that Deco desk a little different- a long story to type here....

The armoire, I carved those capitals and they were gilded to match some custom plated hardware. For suppliers of hardware- I usually go to Optimum in England. Buy their 10 volume catalog for 100 or so. Its worth it...

Pete,

I assume the front of the panel is flat. I would make the drop front 1 1/8 thick. first layer would be 3/4, apply the face veneer and something the same thickness on the back side. now the panel is balanced, then rip 3 inch strips of 3/8 fiber board and veneer them with what ever your face veneer is, miter and glue a face frame to the inside of the door, this will leave you with a 3/8 recess for the leather panel. you wont need to veneer the inside edges of the face frame as the leather panel will cover up the raw edge. all outside edges are done last after the face frame is in place. drawing below. red would be the leather insert panel

1/4 inch plywood with leather glue to it will most likely finish out at 3/8
I use Spinneybeck when ever I need leather. thanks for the hardware tip.

I follow you. I am assuming you just spot glue the leather panel inside the frame?

You are right to assume the front of the panel is flat being Beidermier but this Dec. has it drawn with a mitered frame with inset panel. He is asking me how to make it "more Biedermier", so Ill suggest some options but final design is still up in the air until tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks for the leather contact.

That hardware contact can also match exactly missing hardware, plus custom work.

I appreciate the info you provide. Thanks
