I've been pressing some medium size panels 25 x 15" and have some crinkles in the veneer after the pressing, a lot like wrinkles that look like grain. The veneer is reasonably flat going into the press. Usually I just sand these little surface ripples out afterwards. However these are hand stained veneers assembled into a marquetry picture so I can't sand them without sanding off the color. Any ideas what I can do to prevent this?

Brent,

What kind of veneer is it and what kind of glue are you using?

Maple and birds eye maple. Titebond slow set veneer glue. I do a lot of work with both these woods and glues. Now I think about it it might be because I applied too much glue. The spaces under the wrinkles is clearly filled with glue. Although in the past it's been my experience that excess glue just soaks into the woods. The effected area is ocean water. The wrinkles are only visible with slanted light. I'm telling people they're waves in the ocean. I'm such a sleeze.

Brent,

I asked this question because I thought to myself, I bet he is using maple with a PVA glue.

The reason I thought this is because 90% of all the wrinkling problems I have talked with people about are with maple and PVA glue.

Maple is notorious, especially birdseye, for wrinkling and the higher amount of water in PVA glues exacerbates the problem.

The last issue is speed. The faster you get it in the press and under pressure once the veneer touches the glue the less chance you will have of wrinkling.

Also, make sure you are not spreading the glue on the veneer, only on the substrate.

If you got away from using a PVA glue you should eliminate this problem.

Yup. I had this exact problem, went for Unibond, and the problem went away. Also, the problem of veneer wanting to curl away from the substrate went away.

Brent:
If you're sure all the various veneers are the same thickness, you can use a hard caul on top in the press. Seems like this SHOULD reduce/eliminate the problem, but I don't use PVA with veneer. If you're already doing this, give me an ethernet dumbslap.
