I´m about to apply Wenge veneer to some drawerfronts. Since it is a very porous material I´m afraid that some glue spots will appear on the surface. Trying to make it less noticable I want to use the dark katalyst and add a little alcohol based wood stain to make it even darker.
The stain comes as a powder and I would try to dissolve it in as little alcohol as possible and add it to the glue.
Has anybody ever tried that? Would it compromise the strength of the glue?

Thanks for any input

I've always just added the dye powder directly to the glue, without the alcohol, with no discernible ill effects.

I've added Transfast water soluble (dissolved in water) without problem. I tinted the urea formaldehyde VERY dark as there was tiny dots of bleed-thru everywhere. It was only after several tests that I realized the light-colored dots were adhesive bleed-thru. Probably used the Dark Mission Brown. Some testing would be advised.

Frank,

Both, Don's and Enrico's suggestions will work as well as your idea. You wont compromise the glues strength because it will take so little of the mixed dye to do the job you'll be fine.

Thanks for your advice I really apreciate that. I mixed a alcohol soluble dye with a tiny amount of alcohol and added about 1% to the glue, worked very well.
As Darryl sugested a very little amount will do the job.
I was trying to add just a bit of the powder(of a black water based dye) on a previous projekt and on spreading the glue I noticed a lot of black spots, thats why I was asking. Could have been to much of the powder or improper mixing however this time it worked great.

Frank,

I actually prefer premixing the powdered dye into a small amount of alcohol as well since I also find it doesn't dissolve quite as good as I like if you mix it directly into the glue.
