I am about to press a small (1' x 2') curved panel using 3 layers of 1/8" bending birch. The panel will bend over the long demention with the face veneer on the outer side of the curve. The face is a radial match. The Birch side of the bending ply runs the long way as well.I'll be using PPR glue. The panel will be set into a solid style and rail frame and will be an end panel of the project. I need to apply a veneer to the inside as well to match the other interior parts.
My questions are 1) Should I press all 3 bp parts with the Birch the same way leaving the coarse Luan on 1 side? Or turn 1 so birch is under both face veneers? 2) If all the same way should the birch be under the Face Radial or the interior? The inner finish veneer will have the grain going across the 1' and thus with the grain of the luan.Does this need to be an opposed 2 ply? Trying to keep the panel thin to keep the (tangs?) on the rails as thick as possible. Maybe since it will be in a frame it won't make too much difference?

Greg,

I think you'll be OK with all three sheet pressed the same direction, just make sure the luan side faces out towards the radial. I find this product facets on the birch side when you bend it, at least the last time I used it it did, and you don't want to see a slightly faceted radial match. Personally I would cross band between the luan and your radial face, but let the birch back go directly against the interior veneer. This isn't exactly a balanced lay up but as its a small panel in a frame, you'll be OK.

I don't know if you already have the bending birch plywood but if you don't consider locating 1/8" Italian bending poplar. Its a much better bending ply than the birch. Its three ply, doesn't facet at all, and no need to cross band face or back.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Thanks Daryl. I do already have the ben birch. Next time I'll try to find the Italian Pop. If my suppliers carry it.

Darryl:

Where do you get your Italian bending poplar? Is Constantine's a source?

Dixon,

Bending plywoods are usually gotten from your areas plywood supply company, one that supplies the local cabinet shops. I get mine from Atlantic Plywood which has a branch in Portland, ME. If you do not have enough to meet the minimum order you will probably not be able to buy direct. What you can do is check with a local lumber yard which often have ordering capabilities from a plywood supplier and buy through them.

I have no idea if Constantines is a source.

Darryl

Depending on where you are located, my most excellent supplier, Cambio Plywood in Cranston, RI, has both bending birch and poplar. I have used both. The only problem with it is when I try to stand it up against the wall with the other plywood, it seems to be floppy and bendy... funny that....
