I'm making some columns that are in the shape of the form in the picture. My plan is to skin the form with bending poplar and apply a figured veneer.
Problem is how to press this shape.
My idea is to construct the the outside form from some sort of rigid foam so that when the vacuum is applied the foam will crush around then veneer.
Is this a crazy idea?
Would paper backed veneer/contact work better?

I've a couple of thoughts: One, you could wrap the form with evacunet and let the bag adapt itself to the form. You'd still need a rigid caul and I'm not sure what that would be...... maybe 1/8"bending popler. Second, don't vac bag it at all. Use the hammer veneer process with hot hide glue. Jeff

dan,

nice drawing. i wouldnt press it at all. there is a product called bendable mdf. its nothing more than 1/4 in mdf scored on the back for flexibility. determine the over all length and width of the piece you need. lay up your veneer on the mdf. when it comes out of the bag it is still flexable. so in essence you are making your own flexable panel to wrap around the form manually now you have the panel made, start in the center of the convex side and glue the panel to the form, only the convex area, let it dry. once dry it is easier to bend the rest of the panel around the form because nothing is moving around on you. now do one side at a time meeting on the flat side of the form. before doing this true up one edge of the panel that way all you have to do is trim the other end of the panel to make the joint. make sure that the scored side of the mdf is opposite of the direction your are wraping around in. use a flexible pva glue as well.

This sounds like a good approach. Will the veneered MDF remain flexible enough even with PVA to make the 4" radius, should have mentioned that before

yes it will . you can go as tight as a 2 inch radius. the grain of the veneer i assume is going in the short direction? you might want to widen the rib where the panel comes together. this will give you a better gluing surface. you can even wrap the form with a layer of raw flexible mdf, fill all hole and joints with bondo, then apply the veneered flexible panel over that, this will give your column a much smoother look. again, i dont know what dimension you need to finish at.

Thanks and I like the idea of a second layer. Final dimension not real critical for the application.
