I want to build an art deco style writing desk in Birdseye Maple and Curly Sapele veneer but I don't have the matching lumber for the legs. So I guess I will need to apply veneer to the tapered leg stock. Although I've applied a lot of veneer to flat and curved surfaces, I've never done this so I have a few questions:

- What should I use for the leg stock? Maple, poplar, oak, mahagany ?

- Is there a certain sequence I should follow ?

- Pitfalls to watch out for???

Any other tips or suggestions will be appreciated.

preferably mahogany, quartered if possible. white oak is another good choice. if you must use the others, two ply your pieces first, the seasonal movement of the wood will be transfered to the secondary wood and not the face veneer.

There is an interesting article in Fine Woodworking magazine, Dec 2006, Vol 187 about making and veneering a faceted Ruhlmann leg. The famous torpedo leg. Looks to be what you are trying to accomplish.

Hope this helps,

Dave

Kelly,

I think Craig summed it up pretty well but just to be clear, what is the shape of these tapered legs? Are they square tapered, round, octagon, tapered and curved? Please elaborate.

Sincerely

Sorry for the slow reply. I was at Marc Adams School last week.
The legs will be tapered from about 2 1/4" down to 1 1/2".
Thanks

Kelly,

Assuming they are square tapered legs, I would veneer opposite side at the same time, trim the overhang off and veneer the other two sides. If you are doing this in a vacuum press a 1/4" caul over the veneer will be sufficient. If you're using clamps then at least 3/4" cauls both side would be necessary.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
