hi all, i'm building a project with curved cabinet doors and as this is my first vacupress project i had some questions.

firstly,
as far as laying up 2 ply goes, what exactly is recommended for a backing veneer. a paper backed veneer? a phenolic backing? i have a rosewood face veneer and i'm using unibond 800, if i lay up the 2 ply before applying to the substrate will it be too rigid to go around my curved doors?

secondly,
i'm a little apprehensive about veneering the inside of this curve.i sanded the doors slightly to flush up some hardwood edging and fear i may have altered the curve (no more than 1/32). when i press this, how do i ensure i don't have voids where my door no longer matches the form?

thanks for your help. even though i've only been a lurker here, this forum has been an amazing help to me.

Chris,

I prefer a backer grade mahogany for all my two ply work. You can use the other ones you mentioned but I think the mahogany is the most stable and balanced since you're putting raw veneer to raw veneer.

As far as the concern about a good mate between your door and form, I would do this. Take your platen out of the bag and use a bleeder fabric like the EvacuNet for air evacuation instead. Put the door in the bag all by itself with no form. The bag will conform to both sides of your door perfectly. This is another reason to be using two ply. If you have and imperfections in the door surface the two ply can span these spots without showing a bubble like just raw veneer would.

Glad to see you've lost your lurker virginity.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

The veneer yoda is too polite to mention, but Darryl has an excellent video on veneering curved surfaces, available at www.vacupress.com that will provide some introductory info and is highly recommended. Test pressing is also highly recommended. The evacunet takes some getting used to but after a few tries to gain some experience it is easy to use and works very well.

Chris,

If there is any chance that you could take a digital picture of pressing your doors without a platen and posting it here that would be very useful for others to see what a platenless pressing looks like. If you're too far past that part already then thats fine.

Sincerely

Chris,
Here is a page I started that shows how I make my curved panels. Everything is glued at one time. I use a caul over my face veneer, even on curves. I have marks to line up the centers and a little tape to insure they stay together properly. It helps to have another pair of hands when pulling down the vacuum, but not absolutely necessary.
