I have a few projects that I am doing using a torsion box with cardboard honeycomb as the core material. Is it still necessary to use a backer veneer? The demesions of these parts is about 9 1/2"x80" with the core being about 5" in the center of the 91/2"width. total thickness is 1 1/4 inch using 1/4 medex skins and 3/4 honeycomb.

Thanks, Clark

I would say yes.

Because this is a torsion box, maybe you could get away with it, but I really doubt it, especially across the 80" span.

It's really not a big chore to veneer both sides, and then you are sure to be safe. For projects where the back won't be seen, I keep rolls of phenolic backer on hand. Basically, it's the paper component of paper-backed veneer, without the veneer. Usually, there's no seaming, because it comes in large widths.

This question comes up often here, with variations, and the answer usually is yes...do the backer, with some rare exceptions. But most of the time, the answer is play it safe...it's not a hell of a lot more work to simply put on another skin.

My 2 cents...

Try here...

http://www.tapeease.com/

I'm 95% sure that this is where I bought it, but I bought it in large enough quantities that it was a long time ago. I poked around the website, and couldn't find it, although I didn't look very long. If you can't find it, call them directly. If you still come up with nothing, email me and I'll hunt down the receipt.

Let's hope that Clark's veneering skills are better than his exterior illumination skills.
