I have had a problem with my electric vaccum unit cycling every 15 seconds or so since the day I have owned it. I have always just lived with it as it doesnt affect the outcome. I suspect there is probably a leak in the 30ml vinyl bag somewhere. I have spent countless hours trying to locate a leak and have never found one. I just read in the recent fine woodworking a method where put spring clamps on the plastic sealer clip and rod to hold it on, and blow the bag up like a balloon with the air compressor to find the leak. They said it will be readily apparent once the bag is filled as you will hear the air hissing out. Is this the best method of finding a leak? if not how do you find it.

Scott,

The first thing I do when searching out a leak is separate the bag from the pump and check the pump. Pull the hose out of the bag leaving it attached to the pump and see if the pump holds vacuum by itself. If that's fine then go on to the bag.

The bag inflation technique works good as long as you keep the closers from popping off the end of the bag and you don't over inflate so much the seams possibly tear, only a concern on vinyl.

You can also draw a vacuum on the bag and wipe any spots that are suspect with a sponge soaked in food coloring water. When you find a leak the dyed water is pulled through and leaves a mark on the inside of the bag.

I dont know if you got your vacuum system from us or not but no system should cycle any where near that often right out of the box. If its ours give us a call please.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Darryl, I did buy it from you but it had to be a good 4 or 5 years now since I bought it. I have always just used it as it is. I only use it occasionally so it has not been a big deal. I will try the things you say and if I have no luck I will call you for another idea. Thanks for the reply.

Recently I tracked down a persistent small leak but it took several tries and a lot of water with red food dye. I have a thin (10 ml?) vinyl bag and the leak was on one of the edges where the top and bottom are joined. Once I finally determined to also test the edges the leak was found rather quickly. I had expected the leak to be caused by a sharp corner on a to caul so all the initial search attempts were looking in the wrong place. Good luck and good patience.

Wow. I would have never thought to try to check the actual pump unit!! I did as Darryl said and disconnected the bag from the hose. Upon putting great pressure on the end of the hose with my thumb and blocking off any air from coming in , I found that it is the hose or the pump and not the bag at all. I cant find any leak in the hose. All these years I have been looking for a bag leak. The vaccum held for less than a minute and the meter dropped pretty quickly before cycling. Upon cycling the high pressure was restored almost immediately but them it dropped quickly again. So now what do I do? How do I fix a leak in the pump??

Scott,

There is a simple procedure to identify where the pump leak is but I'm not sure its all in the pump since it appears to hold vacuum at least a little longer than when its attached to the bag. We should find the pump leak first and see how much more time that gives you between recycling. I suggest you give me a call so we can have a conversation. 207-725-0935

Darryl Keil
