Subject : Veneer Forms

I am desiging a cabinet that will have two curved doors and curved corners
on the front. I have attached a couple of drawings that show two versions of the designs (View is from the top)

My plane was to laminte two layers of 3/8" bendable plywood for the corner sections, then veneer over the resulting shape. The hieght of the cabinet will be about 31". SO my question is, How continuos does the form have to be for the corner forms...ie Do I need to make a form that has the desired radius all along the length? or will the plywood take the shape with a form that has the radius spaced every 4" to 6"?

I hope my question is clear.

Thanks
Alan

Alan,

If I understand your question correctly and you're not veneering both sides of this corner, then ribs every 4" to 6" on center is fine.

I'm assuming you are going to perminently glue the bending ply to the form and then veneer the face later, is this correct? At least on the corners.

Sincerely

Darryl,

I was not going to glue the ply to the form as I would like to use this for repeated pieces. And I hadn't planned on gluing veneer to both sides allthough perhaps that would be good idea?

I was hoping that ribs every 4-6" would be enough to support the plywood over the form. Here is a sketch of the form I was thinking about. There is a gap between each rib that defines the radius of the bend. I am hoping that the plywood won't "cave in" in the spaces.

Alan,

Like I said, as long as your ribs are no more than 6" apart you'll be fine.

You don't have to glue the bending ply to the form I just thought it would become part of the structure.

The only thing you cant use this form for is to sandwich veneer between the form and panel since it doesn't have a skin on it.

Sincerely

I made two curved doors for a corner cabinet. They had a radius of 16 inches. and were 22 inches tall. I made a form such as yours, but I spaced the "ribs" about 3 inches apart. I also glued a piece of 1/8" bending ply to the ribs to stabilize and strengthen the structure. The doors themselves were made from 6 sheets of 1/8 bending ply glued up with unibond. I don't have a vacuum press so I clamped the sandwich of 6 sheets and glue down with some ratcheting band clamps sold to hold stuff to a roof rack. (Home depot sells a pack of 4 clamps for 16 bucks). I also used the same rig for veneering both sides.

When I made the door core, I put a piece of scrap veneer between the rig and the bending ply so that when I layed up the veneer, the radius would be correct. I'm not sure this was necessary, but this was my first veneer project and my first bending project, so I was over cautious - perhaps.

The doors are ridgid with absolutely no springback. The only difficult part was trimming them square. It help to mark a line on the rig that runs the length of the rig, and then transfer the line to the door. This is a reference line for when you need to rip the sides straight while keeping them parallel to the center line.

Thanks Darryl and Mitch. This clears things up for me.
