Tanner:

Are you considering applying veneer to the cut edges of the MDF as well, or wrapping the MDF with hardwood either before or after veneering the MDF faces?

Many species of veneer are applied directly to MDF every day. To minimize the chance of warping, I would veneer both sides, even if using 3/4" MDF. Have you had an unpleasant experience veneering this substrate?

If the edging is applied before the veneer, there is always the chance that this glue joint will telegraph through the face veneer. If concerned, you could make up a two ply of the veneer and then apply this to the veneer.

www.certainlywood.com and probably some of the other distributors carry "backer mahogany" which is a plainer mahogany veneer in wide widths that is typically used for the back side of veneered panels and the back side of two ply veneers. It is much more economical and a good veneer for practice.

The best ways I've found to level edging flush with the surface is either careful use of hand planes or a modified router offset auxilliary base (teardrop shape). Remove the bottom 1/8" of the base from the middle of the router to the fat end, so that the router will be able to slide over the proud edging. Set the bit depth about the thickness of a pair of business cards (1/32"?) above the surface of the substrate. Slowly rout the excess edging - depending upon grain, et cetera the bit will sometimes chip the edging. Finally bring the edging flush with the surface with a card scraper.
